Lämmintä pukkaa

According to a report in the Wort, Claude Alesch of the meteorological centre at Findel has stated that April is unlikely to become the hottest April on record.

The extremely warm and dry weather this month since a week before Easter has been welcomed by most, but not farmers nor those responsible for water supplies in the Grand Duchy. Various records are likely to fall, but not the maximum temperature record.

So far this month, no rain has been recorded in Luxembourg, a fact which has not been recorded since 1946. And on Wednesday, the 1976 record of 258.2 hours of sunshine was broken. With more than 10% of the month still to run, this record appears to being in the course of being significantly exceeded. It is interesting to note that the average number of hours of sunshine in April between 1971 and 2000 was 171.5.

In 1949, the highest temperature recorded in April was 27.0 C. This is unlikely to be broken within the next few days, according to weather forecasts. 14 April was the hottest day so far, with temperatures reaching 26.7 C. However, the average temperature record is likely to fall. In April 1952, it was 11.0 C for April; so far this month, it has averaged 13.6 C.

This year is certainly showing a huge difference from April 1981, when 18 centimeters of snow were recorded on 27 April at Findel.
